چکیده

Powell (1953) introduced a method for the estimation of serum calcium using the EEL flame photometer, and claimed that it gave results in good agreement with a standard titrimetric procedure. In this laboratory, both these methods were found to give low results when tested against standard sera, prepared by adding known amounts of calcium to serum completely decalcified by treatment with a cation exchange resin. The cause of these low results has been established, and modified procedures for avoiding them have been developed.

Flame photometric determination of electrolytes in tissue and of calcium in serum.

The convenience and accuracy of flame photometric methods for the determination of sodium and potassium in body tissues and fluids suggest the desirability of determining other cations such as calcium and magnesium in the same sample. While reliable procedures for the determination of sodium and potassium have been developed (1, 2), there are apparently no satisfactory flame spectrophotometric ...

The determination of serum bicarbonate by flame photometry.

At the present time, the applicability of the flame photometer to the clinical laboratory for determination of the cations sodium, potassium, and calcium in biological fluids has been demonstrated by numerous investigators (l-7). The determination of magnesium in blood serum and plasma by flame photometry has also been described (2, 8). However, analysis of physiologically significant anions in...

Serum Calcium Using the Eel Flame Photometer

Flame photometry has many applications, and in the clinical field its use in the estimation of serum sodium and potassium is now well established. Difficulties have been encountered in the estimation of serum calcium by flame photometry, since the emission spectrum of calcium is relatively weak and is subject to interference by the presence of other ions, e.g., sodium. Although many methods hav...

Calcium determination by flame photometry; methods for serum, urine, and other fluids.

The convenience and accuracy of flame photometric determinations of sodium and potassium in biological fluids (1, 2) have suggested the desirability of extending these advantages to determinations of calcium. Since calcium emission lines are much less intense than those of sodium and potassium (3), the samples of diluted serum (1: 50) customarily used for sodium and potassium determinat.ions ar...

An automated method for serum calcium utilizing ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid.

A FUNDAMENTAL DIFFICULTY in estimating calcium in serum by photometry arises from the fact that the normal range is narrow relative to the concentration of calcium. In the cases of sodium and chloride which also possess narrow normal ranges, the automation problem has been approached in two different ways. For sodium the Technicon Flame Photometer incorporates an electrical range expander. In t...
